Myths About Training Your Cat
There are many people out there that are surprised to find out that cats CAN be trained. It is a very slow, and lengthy process and can only be done at the speed the cat is comfortable with, but no the less very possible. First, the cat owner needs to know that cats don't speak our language, so we need to familiarize ourselves with how a cat thinks and learns. cats become skillful.
Cats are creatures of habit. To teach them an exceptable behavior you will make that behavior pleasing so they want to incorporate it into their daily habits. Remember your cats will not repeat an action that is unpleasant, so we need to make the situation as pleasing as possible. To do this you will give them rewards and praise whenever they do the action you are looking for. Just remember not to overdo the rewards and praise the cat needs to see them as a reward for doing the appropriate actions and nothing more.
Now, you have to remember that any type of physical or verbal punishment is NEVER allowed. Punishment won't do anything to train your cat for the actions you are looking for. In fact the only thing your cat will learn from punishment is to be afraid of you, since you are the person causing all the unpleasant situations. Your cat will start to get nervous and even sad when you come around. Your loving kitty may even start to generalize the situation and avoid all people, making her a little aggressive in hopes of defending herself from you. If it's an aggressive action you would like to stop from the beginning, then the best approach here is to avoid them. If you give them any type of reaction. They see it as getting attention for that behavior, therefore doing it more for your attention.
When training your feline friend always make sure its fun, and motivating. Be excited for every good thing they do. This builds a good rapport between you and kitty. Also keep in mind that every cat is different and will react differently to every situation.
If your problem is that your cat scratches on your furniture then you can try covering it up or spraying a menthol or citrus aroma. These are unpleasant smells for kitty and they will avoid them. After some time your cat will come to the conclusion that your furniture is an unhappy place to play and go somewhere else to amuse themselves.
Cats are very smart and at times will use other means of getting your attention. So if they are running around, pouncing, climbing, and acting otherwise like they've lost their minds, DO NOT give them any attention. Get up and walk away from them. They will learn that this is not the correct way to get your attention, and will learn to play it your way.
Cats get bored just like everyone else, and if they get too bored they will act out. Try playing with them for 15 minutes at a time to help release some energy, or giving them a massage. Their boredom can be relieved by every day playing and soothing messages that help to cool down. Your cat has wild instincts that makes them enjoy stalking, hunting, chasing, and pouncing. So give them toys to do that with. Get ping pong balls, cardboard boxes, hanging ropes, surfaces to scratch on, or fake mice. For the cat who loves to climb get old shelves, ramps, or pillars. To make it more exciting hide treats in their toys and climbing places.
Cats are very enjoyable and they can really be your best friend if you just handle them with care and diplomacy.
